Texel guinea pigs, an increasingly favored breed, trace their origins to England, stemming from a cross between a Rex and a Sheltie guinea pig. This unique lineage blesses them with their distinctive long, wavy hair. While their body hair grows continuously, their facial hair does not, lending them a distinctive appearance. Available in a myriad of colors, Texel Piggies are a sight to behold!
Merino, a closely related breed, boasts a charming crest adorning their forehead. It’s speculated that this breed emerged from a blend of Rex and Coronet guinea pigs. Like their Texel counterparts, Merinos demand meticulous care and attention.
Given their luxurious locks, both Texel and Merino breeds necessitate extra grooming and maintenance. Regular brushing, at least once a day, coupled with trimming around sensitive areas like the ears, eyes, stomach, and genitals, is paramount to prevent matting. Additionally, frequent ear cleaning with coconut oil is recommended to stave off wax buildup. Trimming around the eyes is equally essential.
Furthermore, these breeds are particularly susceptible to heatstroke, especially in warmer climates. It’s advisable to house these adorable piggies indoors for the majority of the year, unless you can provide careful monitoring or reside in cooler environs.
